Rock investigations

Understanding the Core

Construction projects in civil engineering, industrial production plants and infrastructure more than often coincide with bedrock and its properties. Whether surface or underground, the position of solid bedrock is not the only parameter of importance. Rock quality must be determined carefully to optimize the costs of your project. Small-scale properties of rock material include rock type, alteration degree, grain size, degree of foliation, and main mineral content. Main physical properties are compression, shearing and tensional strength as well as deformation parameters, Young’s modulus and Poisson’s coefficient. Considering properties of rock mass, they include presence of discontinuities, such as joints and contacts between different rock species. Furthermore, bearing capacity of rock mass is depending on type of load: static or dynamic. Static moduli are measured with deformational tests. For dynamic conditions, the moduli are calculated from elastic wave velocity and density. Depending on your case, this information will be needed to determine the rock quality or rock strength index which will form the basis for rock reinforcement and grouting calculations. The basic data are collected from your project site. The site investigations include detailed geological mapping, geophysical investigations and sampling, eg. core drilling. Organizing field investigations under challenging conditions is our specialty.

We shall provide you with engineering geological, individually tailored solutions for your projects on or under bedrock surface.

Soil investigations

Information about the soil serves as the starting point for all construction planning. What lies beneath the surface is not always what one might imagine. You may encounter anything from clay to rock, old structures, or contaminated soil. Geotechnical investigation begins with researching the site’s history and compiling existing soil data from the area. Based on this information, the necessary exploratory drillings are planned. The drilling process can take from a few days to several weeks, depending on the location and scope of work. The results of these drillings form the planning solutions. Geotechnical data is the basis for planning. We analyze soil samples in our own laboratory, which is equipped with a wide range of measuring devices. Our laboratory also conducts measurements of soil parameters and its bearing capacity. We also perform radon measurements in the soil. This is done by taking a sample from the soil pore air. In urban areas, investigations also include soil contamination, groundwater testing, and analyses of neighboring structures. All this is part of our expertise.
