Uranraitti Retaining Wall

Client: City of Tampere, Construction: 2019-2021 The geotechnical and structural design of the retaining wall, as well as the structural design of stairs and light art installations, including workshop drawings, were commissioned by the City of Tampere.

A new road connection, Uranraitti, was constructed between the residential area in Santalahti, Tampere, situated between Pispalanharju and Lake Näsijärvi, and the railway. The terrain is heavily sloped, necessitating a retaining wall between the ridge and the road. A trial pile driving test was conducted, indicating that the sheet pile did not penetrate the ground adequately. The chosen solution was to use bored piles and a steel sheet pile wall. The sheet pile wall was supported by permanent soil anchors. The maximum height of the wall was 11 meters.

The wall was protected against corrosion on the road side, and frost protection and shotcrete cladding were applied to its surface. The shotcrete surface was enhanced by attaching a light art installation depicting the skyline of Pispala.
